Packing Procedures
- USE HEAVY-DUTY PLASTIC BAGS TO PROTECT LUGGAGE AND SLEEPING BAGS. Bags must travel across the Salmon River and on the rare occasion may spend some time in the river. Each bag should be boldly marked with owner’s name; we suggest using duct tape and permanent markers. This protects the gear from rain or dampness. Additional garbage bags should be packed for the return trip home. Pack bags so they are easy to carry up steep hills to the cabins. Colored masking tape is a great marking tool!
- Pack item in luggage you and your children can easily carry. A duffle bag or backpack and small suitcase work well. Two small bags are easier to get up a steep hill than one large one. (Wheels do not work on Westwind’s sandy terrain).
- Label all belongings with your name for easy identification.
- Some nice extras to pack can be… small plastic bags for seashell collections, beach chair for mom, sand buckets, guitar and good books for your family.
- Tye-dying happens every year. Bring a white t-shirt, socks, hankies, pillowcases, etc. so you have something to dye. The camp store does not sell these items.
- Do not to bring expensive electronic equipment -- these items do not mix well with the salt-air environment or sand and are far too easily lost or damaged.
Most common luggage woes
- Unlabeled items left at camp are difficult to return to owners.
- Luggage may become wet because it was not put in plastic bags.
- Unmarked bags. Imagine 250 pieces of unmarked luggage in unmarked plastic bags, now imagine trying to find yours.
