Arrival and River Crossing into Camp

Campers cross the Salmon River on barges to get to camp. The Salmon River crossing is a 2-minute ride and one of the special characteristics of Westwind. Barges also take the luggage across. After crossing, you will walk up the sandy hill to camp and the lodge. The Westwind site staff will transport all the luggage and supplies to the main lodge.

To insure a smooth and efficient crossing, some steps are suggested below:

  • Arrive on time.
  • Drop luggage off at the boat ramp and then park your vehicle. Please do not leave you vehicle unattended while you chat with friends. It goes a lot quicker if you pull up drop luggage and then park.
  • Remember you are responsible for your children. Do not leave them at the boat ramp with your luggage. This is a very public place as well as lots of cars moving around and they need to be supervised. Keep your children with you and cross the river with them.
  • Arriving
  • Cross into camp on the first available barge and wait for friends on the other side. It moves a lot quicker and we can keep people straight with who is checked in and who still needs help.
  • Remember it is a public parking area. Boaters will be present and we need to allow them to launch boats, park, etc without worrying about 100 moms and kids being in the way of the boat ramp.
  • Wear tennis shoes or aqua socks for the crossing. Your feet may get wet from getting on and off the barge

Parking

Knight Park has been redeveloped over the past years. The parking spots are now well defined and unfortunately at times there are not enough of them. Please take the following steps:
  • Encourage family/friends to carpool.
  • Unload gear at boat dock.
  • Park cars in the single car parking at the north end of the park. If these single spots are full, cars may double up and park two vehicles in the boat/trailer parking adjacent to the restroom. Please do not park in the boat/trailer parking that is perpendicular to the river. If these spots are full, cars may park on the shoulder of the road. Please do not park along the curb within the park. Staff will be present to help with parking.
  • Do not leave anything in the car. Theft does happen so lock all items in the trunk and keep the car clean of any items. If they don’t see anything to steal most likely they will move on to the next car.
  • Be sure to lock you car and turn off your lights. Every year someone needs a jump-start.

At the lodge

When you get to the lodge the first thing you need to do is check in with the nurse. There will be signs directing you. Due to ACA guidelines all medication must be turned into the camp nurse. The nurse will keep medications locked up and you can visit the Health Center to take your medications as well as any first aid needs you may have.

After seeing the nurse you will get your camp packet, including your cabin assignment and name tags. As soon as your luggage arrives up into the main camp area from the river you can get settled in your cabin. The teen volunteers will be available to help carry your items to your cabin.
