General Information about the YWCA and Camp Westwind
The YWCA of Greater Portland purchased 333 acres to establish Camp Westwind in 1936 for $5,475. Tent camping first took place in 1937 and the first facilities were added in 1938. From 1941 to 1944 the camp was used by the US military as an observation point and servicemen spent their furloughs at the site for relaxation. At its largest in 1979, the Westwind site encompassed 703 acres. In the fall of 1979 the YWCA sold 200 acres of estuary land to the United States Forest Service for protective care and to acquire funds to remodel Wilson Lodge and purchase a string of horses. Today, Camp Westwind contains 503 acres of pristine land.Westwind Summer Camp
Camp Westwind summer camp program provides an enriching experience for youth and families throughout the Northwest. An experience at Westwind gives campers and staff alike a new perspective on life and the opportunity for building personal strengths. In today’s world, it is important that people have the opportunity to experience the beauty
and complexity of nature and discover those same qualities within themselves.
Summer programs include marine discovery camp for girls, teen leadership, nature study, ranch camp, teen adventure and general youth camp for children entering grades 2-12.
